I have to admit I always envisioned college sports as strictly for rowdy college students supporting their teams and big wig alumni in their high dollar seats. Never did I imagine a collegiate athletic event as a fun family day out. Last week I was proven wrong. I took my daughter Kallie, 5yrs for a girl’s day out to a UT Women’s Basketball game. We had a blast!
90 minutes before the game Conradt’s Kids Court had free activities such as inflatable’s, face painting, basketball games, and other goodies for the kids. If you are lucky you might even bump into the team mascot, Hook’Em or get an autograph by an alumni player. Kallie was very excited to get a pink Longhorn painted on her face and a free poster. Keep in mind the Kids Court does close 15 minutes before game time and they don’t allow backpacks into the arena.
At concessions, it seems like $3 is the magic number. We bought a hot dog, pretzel, and later cotton candy from a vendor and the all came to $3 each. It was less money than many venues.
There was so much going on in the stadium to get wrapped up in. I know very little about the game myself (yup I’m a geek and I’m ok with that) but the cues from live band and cheerleaders kept me from making a complete fool of myself. I did feel like I had worn a denim skirt to the royal ball because I was wearing red and Kallie, pink of course. Oops.
It was great for me as a mother to bring my daughter to see women playing sports where all kinds of people, men, women, girls, and boys were there to cheer them on. Kallie had so much fun that when she got home she ran to her desk to draw me a picture of a Longhorn to thank me. Yes, we will definitely be going back, but next time Kallie says we HAVE to bring Daddy along. Oh, and next time we’ll be wearing burnt orange!!
